World Cup Memories – ‘92

without comments

Aparajith writes here about his memories of the 1992 Benson and Hedges Cricket World Cup. Here is what I remember most about that tournament.

  1. Miandad jumping up and down – mimicking Kiran More’s appeal.
  2. Crowe and Greatbatch batting for NZ.
  3. Dipak Patel opening the bowling for NZ.
  4. The ridiculous 21 off 1 ball for SA – it broke so many hearts.
  5. Jonty’s dive to run out Inzamam.
  6. Last, but not the least, an emotional Imran’s (not so great) speech at the presentation where he forgot all his teammates.

What do you remember?

Subtle lyrics be damned

Sample these from “Leaving Beirut” – Roger Waters. By the way it is an awesome song!!

Oh George! Oh George!
That Texas education must have fucked you up when you were very small

But now an Englishman abroad is just a US stooge
The bulldog is a poodle snapping round the scoundrel’s last refuge

Is gentleness too much for us
Should gentleness be filed along with empathy
We feel for someone else’s child
Every time a smart bomb does its sums and gets it wrong
Someone else’s child dies and equities in defence rise
America, America, please hear us when we call
You got hip-hop, be-bop, hustle and bustle
You got Atticus Finch
You got Jane Russell
You got freedom of speech
You got great beaches, wildernesses and malls
Don’t let the might, the Christian right, fuck it all up
For you and the rest of the world

Look at the stars

without comments

I have been listening to Coldplay ever since I have returned from office today. Here are the songs that are playing in a loop.

1. Trouble - “… I never meant to cause you trouble

2. Scientist - “Nobody said it was easy, No one ever said it would be this hard

3. Fix You - “When you get what you want but not what you need, When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep

4. Clocks - “Confusion never stops, Closing walls and ticking clocks
Gonna, come back and take you home, I could not stop that you now know

5. Yellow - As Rahul says, “… making an ordinary colour seem so romantic

And I love how they refused to sell their songs to promote Coke and stuff. And I love them for being so U2ish.

What women want!!

without comments

From bash.org:

A woman has a close male friend. This means that he is probably interested in her, which is why he hangs around so much. She sees him strictly as a friend. This always starts out with, you’re a great guy, but I don’t like you in that way. This is roughly the equivalent for the guy of going to a job interview and the company saying, You have a great resume, you have all the qualifications we are looking for, but we’re not going to hire you. We will, however, use your resume as the basis for comparison for all other applicants. But, we’re going to hire somebody who is far less qualified and is probably an alcoholic. And if he doesn’t work out, we’ll hire somebody else, but still not you. In fact, we will never hire you. But we will call you from time to time to complain about the person that we hired.

ROTFL!! Reminds me of Rajesh Advani, who btw, has started blogging again.

  • Microsoft Word’s helpful paper-clip icon now blinks at rate of normal humans
  • Enhanced graphics on “System Is Not Responding” pop-up window
  • Five new card-back designs for Solitaire
  • Lists blocked wireless connections with greater speed and accuracy
  • New operating system, same old Microsoft Paint

Go read the full thing.

DRM – Is it dead??

without comments

Steve Jobs, for one, thinks that it is or at least thinks that it should. Sometimes I wished he blogged. Maybe like Jonathan Schwartz. But he does a pretty commendable job here.

The third alternative is to abolish DRMs entirely. Imagine a world where every online store sells DRM-free music encoded in open licensable formats. In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players. This is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat.

Why would the big four music companies agree to let Apple and others distribute their music without using DRM systems to protect it? The simplest answer is because DRMs haven’t worked, and may never work, to halt music piracy.
